Heavy Snow and Freezing Rain to Hit the UK This Weekend

Large parts of the UK are bracing for heavy snow and freezing rain this weekend, with the Met Office issuing two amber weather warnings. Severe disruptions are expected, including stranded vehicles, delays to rail and air travel, and potential power cuts. The wintry conditions could leave rural communities cut off, with snowfall of up to 30cm forecast in some areas. Temperatures dropped as low as minus 8.6°C overnight in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, and chilly weather is expected to persist throughout the weekend, ranging from 2°C to 5°C, with highs of 7°C in south-west England.
Councils across London and southern England have stepped up emergency measures to protect vulnerable residents during the cold snap. Additional accommodation has been made available to ensure rough sleepers stay safe in the freezing conditions. A spokesperson for the Met Office stated that the coldest temperature recorded in January last year was minus 14°C in Dalwhinnie, in the Highlands, a reminder of the potential severity of UK winters.
