Headquarters in Lambeth for LFB plans submitted

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has submitted a planning application to refurbish its headquarters at 8 Albert Embankment. The application also includes plans to modernise Lambeth Fire Station, which forms a part of the building.

8 Albert Embankment was constructed by the LFB in the 1930s to be a combined fire station and office block, with the fire station occupying the ground and first floors and the six floors above being office spaces. The office space served as the headquarters of the brigade until 2008, when it relocated to Southwark. It is currently vacant, and the plans would make use of the LFB’s own estate, rather than continue to lease commercial property.

The proposed plans would see the vacant office spaces “refurbished and brought back into service,” the brigade says, and make the offices “home to the essential support services that make up the Brigade’s headquarters function.”

Alongside the renovated office space, work would also be carried out to upgrade and refit Lambeth Fire Station, including new equipment stores and workspaces, as well as remodelled accommodation for firefighters. Because it is a Grade II listed site, “extra care will be taken to preserve key historic elements found in the building’s original design,” the LFB said. The training space in the yard and the drill tower will also see investment, and the appliance bays will be adapted to accommodate specialist vehicles if needed.

A new space will also be created to centre around the existing Memorial Hall where the sacrifice of fallen London firefighters is remembered. This space would allow its historic collection to be displayed, to be used for educational purposes and community outreach. A community room for local residents and groups to use will also be there.

A series of consultations were conducted with the local community before the planning application for the new headquarters were submitted to “ensure the views and needs of nearby residents and the local community were considered.”

Details of the planning application for 8 Albert Embankment can be found on the planning portal for Lambeth Council.
