Hammersmith Bridge to have temporary closures

Hammersmith & Fulham Council have confirmed Hammersmith Bridge will be closed for six 24-hour periods on Friday to Saturday evenings in the coming weeks for repair work.
Engineers need to lift the 137-year-old cast iron bridge and replace the corroded, seized components with new rubber bearings.
To keep everyone safe while Hammersmith Bridge is lifted, it will be temporarily closed to pedestrians and cyclists from 8pm for 24 hours on the following six dates:
- From Friday, 25th October 9pm to Saturday, 26th October – 9pm
- From Friday, 1st November 9pm to Saturday, 2nd November – 9pm
- From Friday, 8th November 9pm to Saturday, 9th November – 9pm

- From Friday, 22nd November 9pm to Saturday, 23rd November – 9pm

They will also be carrying our repairs to the footways from Monday ,14th October onwards. To do this they will close one footway at a time from 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday. The opened footway will be marshalled and clearly signed. This work on Hammersmith Bridgewill take about two months to complete both footways and access over the bridge will be maintained during the footway repairs – except for the closure periods listed above. River traffic will not be affected.

In April 2023 the Department for Transport agreed to H&F’s request for funding towards carriageway repair and installation of a new cycle lane on the bridge, once stabilisation is complete. An H&F spokesperson said: “We are grateful to the DfT for the £2.9million carriageway funding and look forward to its approval of our business case for the full restoration of the historic bridge.”
