Gun buyback announced in Australia following Bondi shooting
Australia’s government has announced a gun buyback scheme following the shooting at Boni Beach, the country’s deadliest mass shooting in decades. The scheme is the largest since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre which saw 35 people killed and led the country to introduce strict gun control measures.
Fifteen people were killed and dozens more were injured after two gunmen attacked a Jewish festival on the world-famous beach. They are believed to have been motivated by “Islamic State ideology.” The attack, which has been declared a terrorist incident, was committed by a father-son duo, according to police.
Just a day after the shooting, representatives from the federal government and leaders from all of Australia’s states and territories agreed to introduce strict gun control measures. Prime Minister Anthone Albanese said that there are now over 4 million guns in Australia, even more than there were during the time of the Port Arthur Massacre.
“We know that one of these terrorists held a firearm licence and had six guns, in spite of living in the middle of Sydney’s suburbs,” he said. “There’s no reason why someone in that situation needed that many guns.”
The gun buyback scheme will involve buying surplus and newly banned firearms, funded on a 50-50 bases between states and territories. The government estimates that hundreds of weapons will be collected and destroyed by the scheme.
Limits are also set to be imposed on the number of firearms that one individual can own, as well as restrictions on open-ended firearms licensing and the types of guns legal to own in the country. Australian citizenship is set to become a condition to hold a license.
The government will also work towards a national register of firearms and the regulators will have better access to criminal intelligence.
