Greener Schools funding boosts Kensington & Chelsea’s Net Zero drive

Kensington & Chelsea Council has secured £295,000 from the Greater London Authority’s Greener Schools Programme to enhance energy efficiency in three local schools, Avondale, Colville, and Bevington. This funding aims to support the borough’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2030.
The allocated funds will facilitate the installation of LED lighting and double-glazed windows at Avondale and Colville schools. Bevington School will also benefit from LED lighting upgrades and will collaborate with North Kensington Community Energy (NKCE) to establish a community-owned solar energy project. NKCE has previously implemented successful solar initiatives in the area, including installations at Avondale Park Primary School and the Westway Sports Centre, collectively reducing carbon emissions by over 60 tonnes annually.
These initiatives are part of the council’s broader efforts to retrofit school buildings, including the installation of heat pumps and upgraded pipework. Additionally, the council has conducted air quality audits at Avondale and Colville primary schools and installed bike hangers to promote active travel. Climate change assemblies and an Environmental Summit are also planned in partnership with the local charity Urbanwise.
The Greener Schools Programme, launched by the Mayor of London, aims to decarbonise London schools through various interventions, including the installation of solar panels and other retrofit measures. The programme encourages boroughs to collaborate with community groups and third-sector organisations to implement sustainable energy solutions.
