Game controllers to Russia banned by UK government

The British government has banned the export of video game controllers to Russia in a measure that hopes to prevent their use in piloting drones on Ukraine. The new measures were announced by the Foreign Office as it works to cut Moscow’s access to British technology in its ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
A Russian missile attack on the capital, Kyiv, saw at least ten people dead in one of the worst on the city since the start of the war. “Today, we have announced new sanctions, including the shocking repurposing of gaming console controllers to kill Ukrainians by Russian,” Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty told MPs.
A social media post from the Foreign Office said that game controllers, such as those made for PlayStation or Xbox are banned from being used by Russia’s army to control drones on the battlefield. Other measures hope to “cut Russia’s war machine off from innovative British tech, world-leading software, and close loopholes exploited by Putin’s cronies,” according to the post.
This news came a day after the Kremlin revealed sanctions against 15 British MPs and six House of Lords members, banning them from entering the country. Among them was Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmicheal and new Labour MP Johanna Baxter who campaigned for the return of Ukrainian children taken from their homes.
“The abduction of Ukrainian children by Russia is one of the most heart-wrenching and indefensible crimes of this war, which the world cannot ignore,” Baxter said. “And sanctioning me, as they just have done, the Russian Government will not silence me.”
