Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea Council Drives Grenfell Safety Progress

At July’s Full Council meeting, Kensington and Chelsea Council Leader, Cllr Elizabeth Campbell, detailed the Council’s progress on implementing the Grenfell Inquiry’s recommendations. Cllr Campbell emphasized the importance of the upcoming publication of the Inquiry’s final report on 4th September, describing it as a “hugely significant” moment for the community.

With a focus on action over words, she highlighted the Council’s efforts to improve building and resident safety following the Inquiry’s Phase One report. This includes the completion of 98% of a programme to replace over 3,000 fire doors in high-risk buildings, comprehensive fire risk appraisals for external walls, and the installation of Security Information Boxes (SIBs) in all residential buildings over 11 meters.

Additionally, the Council has offered Person-Centred Fire Risk Assessments (PCFRAs) to all residents, resulting in 748 completed assessments and 362 Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) issued to vulnerable residents. Fire safety booklets outlining evacuation procedures have been distributed, and floor plans of high-rise buildings have been shared with the London Fire Brigade.

Cllr Campbell reaffirmed the Council’s dedication to providing a “credible, honest and community-led” response to the Inquiry’s Phase Two recommendations and ensuring a lasting legacy from Grenfell. The Council’s comprehensive safety measures underscore its commitment to resident safety and transparency.
