Fulham Takeaway Fined £13,000 for Years of Grease Dumping
A Chinese takeaway in west London has been fined over £13,000 after persistently pouring fats, oils and grease into the sewer system- causing blockages that stretched on for years. The Fulham takeaway, China Panda, was taken to court after repeated warnings failed to stop the restaurant from discharging waste that risked damaging local infrastructure. Despite being told to install a grease management system, the takeaway failed to maintain it properly, leading to multiple blockages being reported between 2022 and 2023.
The business was handed the fine at Reading Magistrates’ Court and ordered to cover additional legal costs, bringing the total penalty to £13,090.
It’s part of a broader issue facing London’s sewer network, which has to handle tens of thousands of blockages every year, many of them caused by food waste, oils, and grease from both homes and commercial kitchens.
A spokesperson involved in managing the capital’s water and waste systems said that while education and support are offered to help businesses comply, legal action becomes necessary when those efforts are ignored.
They added that “fatbergs” formed from this kind of waste can lead to flooding, property damage and pollution in local rivers, costing millions to deal with every year.
The Fulham takeaway case highlights the need for responsible waste disposal and the importance of businesses taking their environmental duties seriously. Industry experts advise that food outlets should be installing and maintaining proper grease traps, which help to filter out harmful materials before they reach the sewers.
