Football Action Marks the Start of the Paris Olympics

The Paris Olympics have officially kicked off, and it all started with some exciting football action featuring Spain and Argentina in Paris and Saint-Étienne on Wednesday, 24th July. Spain took on Uzbekistan at the Parc des Princes, a stadium in the western part of Paris that used to be the stomping ground of French striker Kylian Mbappé, when he played for Paris Saint-Germain.

Meanwhile, Argentina began their campaign against Morocco at 3 p.m. in Saint-Étienne, playing at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium. This stadium is lovingly called Le Chaudron (The Cauldron) because of the passionate atmosphere created by the local fans. The streets around Parc des Princes were buzzing with excitement. This area is also near Roland Garros, famous for the French Open, and will host Olympic tennis.

About 150 Uzbekistani fans gathered outside the Porte d’Auteuil tube station, waving flags, singing songs, and beating drums as they walked to the stadium, all under the watchful eye of a light police presence. Security was expected to ramp up significantly later that evening at the same stadium, as Israel faced Mali in Group D amidst ongoing tensions in Gaza.

Over at Stade de France, the rugby sevens competition began at 3:30 p.m., with Australia taking on Samoa at the national stadium. Host nation France was set to play against the United States later in the day. The start of the Olympics has brought a lively and festive atmosphere to Paris, as fans from all over the world come together to support their teams and enjoy the international sporting event.
