Finnish jets complete first NATO mission

The Finnish Air Force successfully completed its inaugural NATO mission under the Air Policing and Air Shielding operation, returning home after a deployment in Romania. This marked a significant milestone for Finland, as it was their first major mission since joining NATO.

On 3rd June, 2024, seven Finnish Air Force F/A-18 Hornet fighters arrived at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base in Romania. Over the course of nearly two months, until July 29, 2024, the deployment involved over 250 personnel from all Finnish Air Force units. The mission was structured in three rotations, each providing a fresh team to support the operation.

Major Toni Vanhatalo, who commanded the third rotation, reflected positively on the mission, describing it as “interesting and rewarding.” He noted that the experience provided valuable insights into participating in NATO missions and adapting to a new operational environment. “Being under the direction of NATO’s command structure required some minor changes in the planning of flight operations, but we adapted well, and also gained some lessons for developing our operations at home,” Vanhatalo stated. He also emphasized the smooth cooperation with Allied forces and the continuous training activities that enhanced their capabilities.

During the deployment, Finnish jets participated in the exercise Ramstein Legacy 24, conducted in Romania and Bulgaria. They collaborated with Romanian F-16s and the United States Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bombers to practice escort scenarios. Additionally, the Finnish F/A-18 Hornets were on quick-reaction alert alongside the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon jets, bolstering NATO’s collective defence posture in the Black Sea region.

NATO’s Air Policing and Air Shielding missions are critical components of the Alliance’s efforts to ensure collective deterrence and defence, maintaining the security and integrity of NATO airspace. The Finnish deployment has been deemed a success, significantly enhancing the integration and interoperability among NATO Allies.
