Young Rowers Swap Paddles for Pavements in Fulham’s Festive Fun Run
Fulham Reach Boat Club is gearing up for its annual Festive Fun River Run on Sunday, 1 December, inviting runners of all ages to don their brightest Christmas outfits and race alongside the club’s rowers. The event, a staple of the festive calendar, raises funds to support the club’s vital charity work, which benefits over 1,000 local children each year by making rowing accessible to all.
Young rower Niamh Stafford, an enthusiastic participant, encourages everyone to join the festive race. “Definitely do it,” she says. “It’s for a great charity, and it’s also fun to dress up and come along with your friends!”

Transforming Lives Through Rowing
Fulham Reach Boat Club was recently awarded Community Club of the Year at the national Community Sport and Recreation Awards, a testament to its mission of making rowing a sport for everyone. The club’s impact goes beyond the water, transforming the lives of young people and adults alike.
Loujine Ali, a participant in the club’s bursary programme, shared her personal experience: “It changed my life. If I didn’t take this up, I wouldn’t have the self-discipline I have now. I’ve developed so much confidence and realised how important sports are for mental wellbeing as well as physical fitness.”
More Than Rowing: Boats Not Bars
The club also leads the inspiring Boats Not Bars programme, which provides rowing courses for people in prison. The six-to-eight-week initiative helps individuals gain indoor training qualifications and offers ongoing support for those reintegrating into society. The programme connects participants with job opportunities and a supportive community, helping them thrive beyond incarceration. Work placements are also in development, further extending the programme’s reach.
Why Join the Festive Fun Run?
The Festive Fun River Run offers a chance to chat with volunteers from Fulham Reach Boat Club, who are eager to share how rowing has positively impacted countless lives. Niamh believes rowing should be open to everyone, saying: “Rowing has a stigma that it’s only available to the rich, but Fulham Reach ensures it’s accessible to all. I’ve made so many friends through rowing—it’s social, community-focused, and incredibly rewarding.”
Whether you’re a seasoned runner or looking for an excuse to embrace the Christmas spirit, the Fun Run promises a day filled with joy and camaraderie, all while supporting a great cause.
