Later this month, Volvo will unveil its latest electric SUV, the EX60, to fill the gap between the X40 and EX90. The car will come with 4WD and new battery tech that allows it to cover 505 miles on a full charge under the WLTP standards, according to its head of program management, Akhil Krishnan.
Thanks to an 800V electric architecture, it can charge 210 miles of range in just 10 minutes, as long as you use a 400kW charger when the battery is down to 10-20%. These are all similar to BMW’s new iX3.
The EX60 will be exclusively an EV with no petrol powered XC60 version . That car (pictured) has been updated and will be sold alongside the all-new one, similar to what Porsche has done with the Macan.
One of the unique features of the new car is the ‘cell to body’ battery where the battery’s cells are stacked straight into the car’s body, meaning that the outer case strengthens the body. This is lighter, according to Volvo, while still maintaining strength and rigidity.
Aerodynamics also played a part in its design, working “in a smart way,” according to Krishnan. This allows it to have the space and practicality expected of a Volvo SUV, while still being slippery enough to get the most out of its batteries.
