The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme has broken the electric hypercar record at the Nürburgring. The Chinese electric supercar, built by a sub-brand of EV manufacturer BYD, had already become the world’s fastest EV, hitting a top speed of 496.22 km/h (309.56mph). And now, it has lapped the famous German circuit in just 6 minutes, 59.157 seconds, breaking the previous record from an EV by over five seconds and becoming the first battery-powered car to finish in below seven minutes.
Experienced German racer, Moritz Kranz took the wheel. Kranz has already lapped the “green hell” 10,000 times over his career. “The Nürburgring Nordschleife is the most demanding track, and our lap time is a testament to the development skills of BYD and YANGWANG,” he said. “Without their intense work to balance a high-powered EV platform with the difficult demands of the chassis set-up, this great lap time would not have been possible.”
The U9 Xtreme, uses the world’s first mass-produced 1200V ultra-high-voltage platform, and comes with a high-performance electric motor at each wheel, each capable of over 30,000rpm, and delivering a total of over 3,000PS. This helps it offset the weight of the batteries, boasting an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 1,217PS per tonne.
Keeping that power in check, the electric hypercar uses an intelligent body-control system, as well as a redesigned cooling system from the standard U9, new titanium-alloy carbon-ceramic braking system, and semi-slick tires jointly developed by Giti. These help it not only in straight-line speed but navigate the Nürburgring’s challenging corners and elevation changes.
The U9 Xtreme is available in limited numbers, with only 30 being made.
