Eiffel Tower summit closed due to extreme heat

The top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris has been closed to visitors as a result of the ongoing heatwave affecting Europe. “Due to the current heat wave, the Eiffel Tower is taking measures to ensure the comfort and safety of our visitors and staff,” according to a statement on the tower’s website. The first and second floors remain open but staff are advising anyone that has not prebooked tickets to postpone their visit to the Eiffel Tower.
Temperatures in the French capital are expected to hit 36 degrees Celsius, while areas in the south of France are experiencing temperatures as high as 40 degrees. The French government has issued a high-level heatwave alert in over 80 areas around the country.
The Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889 for the World’s Fair, initially intended to be a temporary structure. It would become a national symbol of France and would go on to be one of the planet’s most visited monuments.
Other European landmarks, including Belgium’s Atomium in the capital, Brussels, have also been impacted, with the attraction reducing its visiting hours because of the heat. Meanwhile, the Italian capital, Rome, has seen wildfires break out as a result of the scorching temperatures.
