EasyJet Flight Forced to Divert After Mid-Air Brawl Over Karate Kid Movie

An EasyJet flight bound for Gatwick was forced to make an emergency landing in Portugal after a heated altercation broke out between two families mid-air. The dispute, reportedly triggered by a young boy watching The Karate Kid, escalated to the point that the pilot had no choice but to divert the aircraft to Porto, where both families were removed by police.

The incident occurred on a return Easyjet flight from Lanzarote, with passengers witnessing tensions flare at 30,000 feet. The boy’s mother, a 26-year-old letting agent from South London, claims the trouble started when a woman seated four rows ahead took issue with her five-year-old son watching the 2010 remake of the film. The woman allegedly demanded the child turn it off, despite the mother’s insistence that the volume was low. What began as a verbal disagreement soon spiralled into a physical confrontation, with accusations of racial abuse and assault.

The mother described the experience as “extremely distressing,” claiming that the other passenger verbally abused her son and physically assaulted her disabled partner. However, reports suggest that both families engaged in disruptive behaviour, leading the crew to request an emergency diversion. Upon landing in Porto, Portuguese authorities, including the national police force PSP, handled the incident, as reported by Portugal Resident, which covers major news from the country.

A spokesperson for EasyJet reiterated the airline’s zero-tolerance policy on disruptive passengers, stating,

“Safety is our highest priority. We do not tolerate abusive or violent behaviour on board.”

While no further details have been released on whether charges will be pressed, the airline assured passengers that they were working to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

This isn’t the first time passenger disputes have led to mid-air diversions, raising questions about in-flight etiquette and the challenges faced by airline staff in maintaining order.
