Drone strikes on cartels: Mexico warns against

Following reports that the US is considering drone strikes on cartels, Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum has repeated her opposition to such a response.
“We do not agree with any kind of intervention or interference,” she told reporters Tuesday at her daily morning news conference. “This has been very clear: We coordinate, we collaborate, [but] we are not subordinate and there is no meddling in these actions.”
The comments reaffirm the president’s well-known views on a sensitive topic, which comes following reports that the Trump administration could consider drone strikes on cartel targets. “The administration is prepared to act unilaterally if Washington cannot secure Mexican support,” the LA Times reports.
Earlier this week, six current and former US officials were quoted by NBC News saying that the administration was weighing whether drone strikes in Mexico “combat criminal gangs trafficking narcotics across the southern border.” Six Mexican cartels have already been branded foreign terrorist organisations by Washington, something which is staunchly opposed by Mexico.
Many in the Latin American country believe that this move could signal potential military strikes, a first from the US on Mexico in over a century. Sheinbaum has agreed to step-up military and CIA surveillance flights, hoping to gather more intelligence on the cartels, according to officials.
But drone strikes would be a line that Mexico does not want to cross and could sour relations between it and the US. Experts say it could harm cooperation illegal immigration and drug smuggling, as well as other issues between the two nations.
It would also be a sensitive topic for Mexicans as the country has already lost half of its territory to the US. California and parts of Texas were once part of Mexico but following the Mexican-American War, over half of its territory was lost in what those south of the border consider imperialistic aggression. Mexico also saw a military occupation from the US in 1914 and an unsuccessful attempt to capture Pancho Villa, the famous revolutionary leader.
