Dealership in France sees Teslas torched

A dozen cars at a tesla dealership were set alight in France, a magistrate from the Toulouse public prosecutor’s office has revealed. The attack caused damage to both cars for sale and customer-owned cars taken for repairs. While the motive is not yet clear, it is the latest incident surrounding  Tesla cars. Protests and boycotts have targeted the brand in response to controversies around its CEO, Elon Musk.

Authorities believe it was an arson attack due in part to the fire pattern. It appeared as though there were a minimum of three separate fire origins, none of which damaged the building of the dealership. Of the dozen cars burned, eight had been completely destroyed and the remaining four sustained partial damage. The fire was “not at all accidental” according to the prosecutor’s office.

The damage is estimated to be around 700,000 Euros, according to FranceInfo. Video from the dealership showed the extent of the damage. Some cars had been so badly burned that only  “skeletal remains” are left.

The arsonist appeared to target only a small group of cars, such as several Model Ys and Model 3s. In another area of the dealership, a Model 3 has been damaged in the front but was in better shape than some of the other cars.

Protests, boycotts, and demonstrations against Tesla and Elon Musk have been increasing in recent months. Protesters in Berlin recently projected the word “Heil” onto the Gigafactory there while in London, anti-Tesla posters have been posted. Numerous demonstrations have gathered around dealerships in America over the past few months.

Tesla has also seen its sales dwindle amid calls to boycott the electric vehicle brand.
