Dalai Lama Turns 90 with a Message to the World – and to China

Thousands of Tibetan Buddhists gathered in Dharamshala this week as the Dalai Lama 90th birthday celebrations kicked off, undeterred by heavy Himalayan monsoon rain. This Dalai Lama 90th birthday moment marks both a personal milestone and a statement of resilience for a leader in exile. Draped in his familiar red robes with a bright yellow shawl, the 14th Dalai Lama appeared steady as he emerged with the support of two monks, chanting prayers echoing around the hilltop temple complex.
The Dalai Lama 90th birthday celebrations stretched back through the week, beginning with long‑life prayers on Monday and building momentum towards the main event on Sunday. Traditional Tibetan drums, cymbals, and even bagpipes filled the air, while dance troupes offered performances rich in cultural resonance. Among the audience were Indian ministers and global figures, including actor Richard Gere, who offered remarks that honoured both his age and legacy.
Richard Gere affectionately described the day as “joyous, joyous” and called the Dalai Lama
“a man who totally embodies selflessness.”
That selflessness was evident again on Saturday, when the Tibetan leader assured followers he was in sound health and hoped to live on, perhaps even to 130, signalling his ongoing commitment to his spiritual mission.
A pivotal moment of the Dalai Lama 90th birthday celebrations came when he confirmed plans for a successor. He stressed that the reincarnation would follow centuries‑old Buddhist tradition, guided by the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the institution he established. He emphasised that any legitimate process would respect tradition and take place “in the free world,” effectively excluding Beijing’s influence. He reaffirmed that “only my inner circle has authority”, directly challenging China’s insistence on state‑approved succession.
That challenge follows a long‑standing battle: while the Dalai Lama’s office consults with senior lamas and spiritual guides, Beijing maintains that any successor must be chosen inside Tibet and sanctioned by the Chinese government. Tibetan communities in exile fear a rival Dalai Lama might emerge from China, undermining their spiritual leadership.
Messages of support poured in from global leaders – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the Dalai Lama as “an enduring symbol of love, compassion, patience and moral discipline.” Former US President Barack Obama, laughingly calling him “the youngest 90‑year‑old I know,” offered birthday wishes and echoed many in lauding his life of service.
