Coalition collapse prompts February election plans in Germany

Germany will hold elections on 23rd February, after the collapse of the country’s governing coalition. The country ended up in a crisis after Chancellor Olaf Scholz, of the Social Democrats, fired finance minister and coalition partner, Christian Lindner of the Free Democrats. This  came after weeks of internal tensions within the coalition.

The date for the election is a proposal. There will be a number of steps to confirm it with the German press agency DPA reporting that these were a formality.

Chancellor Scholz’s next step is to put the current government to a confidence vote, which will be on, 16th December. If he loses, which many expect to happen, the election date will be formally proposed to the President Frank-Walter Steinmeier who will have 21 days in which to dissolve the Bundestag, the German parliament.

Tensions in the coalition boiled over in the Bundestag following a row over the 2025 budget. The chancellor fired Lindner, accusing him of “betraying my confidence” as well as putting the interests of his own party over those of the nation.

Lindner meanwhile accused Scholz of “leading Germany into a phase of uncertainty.”

The turmoil resulted in political chaos for the largest economy in Europe. Coming so soon after the election victory of Donald Trump in the United States means uncertainty about the future of the economy and security of the continent.

Scholz’s original plan for a no-confidence vote in January and elections in mid-March had been rejected by Friedrich Merz, the leader of the opposition Christian Democratic Union as being not soon enough.

Leaders of both of the main parties have agreed on the February date with the Greens and Free Democrats, the junior coalition partners, both supporting the plan, according to the DPA.
