Christmas gateway to see millions driving home
The RAC estimates 37 million cars driving home for the Christmas gateway over the coming days. This year, it predicts to be the busiest since records began.
Those travelling by train to and from Wales will expect disruption as a result of work on lines between London and Bristol. The works will run from 27th December until New Year’s Day. Anyone taking a ferry however should see the busy route between Holyhead port on Anglesy to Ireland, shut last year due to a storm, fully operational this year.
But schedules are still set to be affected, especially due to Storm Bram earlier this year. Irish Ferries has asked travellers between Holyhead and Dublin and Pembroke and Rosslaire to ensure they have a booking confirmed and check the status before heading out.
The Christmas gateway is likely to cause disruption and delays on the road, with over half an hour expected from Newport and the Brynglas Tunnels towards the Prince of Wales Bridge into England.
Queues of over half an hour are expected on the M25 clockwise around London, the M60 around Manchester, and the M62 near Leeds. The RAC is advising drivers to plan ahead an expect delays on major roads, especially between 11:00 and 19:00 where the roads are expected to be the busiest.
