Former Tottenham and England striker Martin Chivers has died aged 80. The striker played 367 games for the north London side, scoring 174 goals to help Tottenham win two League Cups and a UEFA Cup.
Chivers played 24 games for England, scoring 13 goals.
“It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our legendary former striker, Martin Chivers,” Spurs said. “We extend our deepest sympathies to Martin’s family, friends and former team-mates at this incredibly sad time. Rest in peace, Martin. One of the all-time greats.”
In their match against Bournemouth, Tottenham players wore black armbands to commerate Chivers, with manager Thomas Frank paying his tribute before kick-off.
“He’s one of our true legends winning three big titles, and one of our top scorers,” Frank told Sky Sports. “All our thoughts go to the family and their loved ones.”
“Our condolences go out to his friends and family at this sad time,” the Football Association, posted on its social media.
Chivers was born in Southampton, making his debut for the Saints at the age of 17. He would score 106 goals in 190 games, before moving to north London under manager Bill Nicholson in 1968. His career saw him play for Swiss and Norwegian clubs, as well as Norwich City, Brighton, Dorchester Town, and Barnet, before retiring in 1983.
