Casualties on road lowest level outside of pandemic

TfL has found that 2024 saw casualties, the number of people killed or seriously injured on the road, falling to 3,696, the lowest recorded level outside of the pandemic. While London continues to make improvements every year in overall safety performance, 110 people lost their lives on the capital’s roads in 2024.
This is lowest than the number of casualties every year before the pandemic. Serious injuries to children have seen a 12% fall from 211 in 2023 to 185 in 2024. Pedestrian serious injuries have fallen by 8% from 1,225 in 2023 to 1,131 in 2024.
Cars are involved in most collisions which resulted in casualties in 2024. Excess speed, TfL says, remains one of the largest risks to road users with around half of fatal collisions in London in 2024 reporting speed as a contributory factor. TfL says it is committed to lowering speed limits throughout London, planning to roll out 20mph speed limits on its road network next year.
Cycists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians are at the most risk. Of all the casualties in 2024, 81% or 2,988 people, were either walking, cycling, or riding a motorcycle. Buses, TfL found, are the safest way to travel.
