Canberra in Autumn: A magic spectacle

Canberra in autumn is a breathtaking spectacle. As the city transforms into a explosion of reds, golds, and ochres, it becomes the perfect destination for an autumn-inspired getaway. From stunning outdoor scenery to festivals and markets, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in the nation’s capital.

Until 10th March 2025, the Enlighten Festival will once again illuminate its landmarks. Now in its 15th year, this free event features stunning light projections, art installations, and exclusive cultural programs. The city’s most iconic buildings will come alive with mesmerising displays of colour, sound, and movement, creating an unforgettable experience for visitors.

One of the city’s most magical events, the Canberra Balloon Spectacular, will take to the skies from 15th to 23rd March 2025. Watch in awe as vibrant hot air balloons float gracefully over the city, creating a breathtaking scene against the pink and golden hues of sunrise. Spectators can enjoy the best views from the shores of Lake Burley Griffin or the National Arboretum, where the rolling hills provide a perfect vantage point.

For those looking to lose themselves in its autumn beauty, a visit to the National Arboretum is a must. Home to over 44,000 rare and endangered trees, this vast 250-hectare site offers stunning panoramic views of the city’s golden canopy. Other fantastic leaf-watching spots include Mount Ainslie, Black Mountain, Red Hill, and the picturesque Lennox Gardens.

On 29th and 30th March 2025, the Handmade Canberra Markets will showcase over 260 local designers and producers. From handcrafted jewellery and ceramics to unique fashion and artworks, this market is a fantastic way to support local businesses while finding one-of-a-kind treasures.

For art and fashion enthusiasts, the Know My Name: Kee, Jackson and Delaunay Exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia opens on 22nd March 2025. This free exhibition celebrates Australian fashion designers Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson, alongside renowned international artist Sonia Delaunay. Expect a collection of garments, textiles, and prints in a unique fusion of art and design.

Autumn is the perfect season to explore the Canberra Wine Region, where the vineyards turn brilliant shades of red and gold. With a wide range of cellar doors offering award-winning cool-climate wines, visitors can indulge in everything from bold Shiraz to crisp Rieslings. For those short on time, the Canberra Cellar Door Tour runs every Saturday at the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre, providing a convenient way to sample local favourites.

With its dazzling festivals and exceptional scenery, the Australian capital in autumn offers an unforgettable escape. Plan your trip and explore everything the city has to offer!
