Buzzard dive-bombing causes pupils in East London to stay inside

A village primary school in East London has ordered its pupils to remain inside after a dive-bombing buzzard moved into the playground. Concerns were raised that the bird of prey, guarding its nest, could attack children at Dame Tipping Primary school in Havering-atte-Bower after reports it was seen swooping on residents in the area.
Havering Council has said its health and safety time would give “detailed advice to the academy trust responsible for the school, including the use of legal deterrents and other controls.” The council has considered calling on a falconry expert to deal with the buzzard.
The buzzard is Britain’s most common bird of prey or raptor. It is usually a scavenger, typically carrion, according to the RSPB.
The RSPCA, according to Havering Council, said that the bird of prey is likely to be protecting either its nest or chicks. As they are a protected species in the UK, options for intervention are “very limited,” the council said.
“We completely understand how difficult and worrying this situation is for the school and local residents and we regret that there is not a quick or straightforward solution,” it added.
The headteacher said that the school will try to allow children to play outside, whenever possible, and would regularly take them to an outdoor learning facility in the area.
