Bus Crash Near St Paul’s Causes Disruption in City of London

A bus crash in Cheapside on the afternoon of 24th March left three people injured and caused traffic disruption near one of the City of London’s busiest areas. The incident happened just before 2.30pm when a Stagecoach No 25 double-decker struck a raised flower bed outside a Co-op supermarket, not far from St Paul’s Cathedral.
The Cheapside bus crash quickly brought emergency services to the scene. The London Ambulance Service reported that one person was taken to hospital while two others were treated and discharged on site. Footage circulated online showed the bus wedged at an awkward angle, having collided with the planter on the pedestrian walkway.
The crash caused significant delays for motorists and buses, with City of London Police closing roads northbound for around an hour while teams responded and cleared the scene. Traffic in the Square Mile, already tightly managed, slowed further as officers carried out an initial investigation.
Chief Inspector James Minney confirmed: “City of London Police officers were at the scene of a road traffic collision on 24th March at around 2.26pm on Cheapside. Three people were treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service; one person was taken to hospital. The road heading northbound reopened at 3:30pm. Investigations are ongoing.”
Paramedics were quick to respond, arriving just four minutes after being called. The London Ambulance Service dispatched a full team, including a fast response car, an incident officer, a cycle paramedic, and a frontline ambulance crew.
While no serious injuries were reported in this Cheapside bus crash, the event once again highlights the tight choreography needed between buses, cyclists, pedestrians and delivery vehicles in central London. Investigations are under way to determine what caused the bus to veer off course.
Bus collisions remain relatively rare in the capital, with Transport for London tracking accident and injury data in real time. You can explore more detailed data and safety measures directly via the TfL Bus Safety Dashboard which monitors bus-related incidents across the network.
