British journalist detained by ICE
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained British journalist Sami Hamdi following his criticism of Israel on a tour of the US. Trump ally Laura Loomer took credit his detainment, which critics have labelled an “affront to free speech.”
The British journalist was detained by federal immigration authorities at an airport in San Francisco, with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair) saying that it is retaliation for his criticism of Israel during his tour of the country.
In a statement, Cair called it a “blatant affront to free speech.” Hamdi had been on a speaking tour in the US, criticising Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. An official from the Trump administration revealed that he would be facing deportation.
“Our attorneys and partners are working to address this injustice,” Cair’s statement said. It also called for ICE to “immediately account for and release” the British journalist.
“This individual’s visa was revoked, and he is in ICE custody pending removal,” Department of Homeland Security press secretary Tricia McLaughlin wrote on social media. “Those who support terrorism and undermine American national security will not be allowed to work or visit this country.” The post was shared by Loomer who too credit for his detainment.
During the tour, Hamdi spoke at an annual gathering for the Sacramento, California chapter of Cair, and was expected to appear at the Gala for the Florida chapter of the organisation.
