Bold solutions suggested for Gloucester housing crisis

Gloucester is grappling with a significant housing crisis, with 4,700 residents currently on the waiting list for affordable housing. In response, Labour councillors are urging the city’s Liberal Democrat leadership to take decisive action to address the issue.

The Labour group has proposed a series of measures aimed at making the housing market more equitable, particularly for first-time buyers and those in need of affordable homes. Their key proposal is to increase the minimum percentage of affordable housing in new developments from 20% to 30%. Additionally, they suggest giving priority to first-time buyers in accessing newly built affordable homes.

These proposals were submitted as part of a broader call from the Liberal Democrats, who had invited other parties to contribute ideas for tackling the city’s housing challenges. In discussions with the housing cabinet member, Luke Shervey (LD, Longlevens), Labour councillors also put forward the idea of establishing a new social housing development company. This company would be tasked with ensuring high-quality and consistent investment in social housing projects, while also focusing on the development of new homes specifically designed for veterans.

The Labour councillors believe that these measures are crucial for addressing the growing demand for affordable housing in Gloucester and ensuring that the city’s most vulnerable residents have access to safe and secure homes. As the housing crisis continues to escalate, the pressure is on the Liberal Democrat leadership to consider these proposals and take concrete steps towards a fairer and more sustainable housing market in Gloucester.
