Southbound Blackwall Tunnel Closed for Weekend Work

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that the Blackwall Tunnel southbound will be closed this weekend to facilitate crucial works on the A102 road layout. The closure will take place from 11 pm on Friday until 6 am on Saturday and resume from 11 pm on Saturday through to 5 am on Monday. These works are part of the ongoing Silvertown Tunnel Project, which is set to improve connectivity beneath the River Thames by 2025.
The upcoming Silvertown Tunnel, scheduled to open in spring 2025, will link Silvertown with the Greenwich Peninsula in east London. Once operational, tolls of up to £4 during peak hours will be introduced for drivers using either the Silvertown or Blackwall tunnels.
While the Blackwall Tunnel has seen several weekend closures this year, the northbound route will remain open. TfL warns, however, that east and central London roads, as well as alternative river crossings, are expected to experience heavy traffic. The A13 westbound between Canning Town and Whitechapel and approaches to the Rotherhithe Tunnel may see particularly severe delays.
TfL is urging drivers to plan their journeys using public transport options like the Tube and rail services where possible. Tools such as the Journey Planner and TfL Go app are recommended for real-time updates.
Impact on Public Transport:
The 108 bus route will run a split service during the closures, operating between Lewisham and North Greenwich on one end and between Canning Town and Stratford on the other. Woolwich Ferry services are expected to run as normal, although queues for the first ferry may be lengthy. Increased congestion is also anticipated at Tower Bridge and the Rotherhithe Tunnel, as drivers seek alternative routes.
Passengers using the Jubilee Line as part of their diverted journeys will receive automatic refunds from TfL. This measure aims to ease the inconvenience caused by the tunnel closures.
