Protester Scales Big Ben’s Elizabeth Tower in Pro-Palestinian Demonstration
Big Ben and the Elizabeth Tower became the centre of attention on 9th March as a man scaled the iconic London landmark, holding a Palestinian flag. The protester climbed onto a ledge early in the morning, prompting an extensive emergency response that lasted over 16 hours.
The incident began at 7:24 am GMT, when emergency services were called to Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster. The man, barefoot and dressed in dark clothing, made his way several metres up the tower, securing himself on a ledge and refusing to come down. Specialist police officers, London Fire Brigade, and medical teams were deployed to negotiate with him, but the protester insisted he would descend on his own terms. Throughout the day, he could be heard shouting pro-Palestinian slogans while wrapping a traditional keffiyeh scarf around parts of the tower’s decorative stonework.
The situation led to major disruptions around Westminster. Westminster Bridge was closed, and access to parts of Westminster Underground Station and Bridge Street was restricted. Tours of Parliamentary buildings were also cancelled as a precaution. Meanwhile, a small group of onlookers gathered nearby, some chanting “Free Palestine” while others questioned how security had been breached at such a high-profile site.
As the hours passed, negotiators used a megaphone to communicate with the man, while a fire brigade aerial ladder platform was raised close to his position. The protester, however, refused assistance, stating that any approach would “put him in danger” and that he would climb higher if forced. Despite persistent efforts, he remained on the ledge, sharing videos on social media.
By midnight, emergency crews deployed a cherry picker to reach him, and he was safely brought down. He was arrested immediately upon reaching the ground. The Metropolitan Police later confirmed that the arrest was made under public order laws, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
This event has raised serious security concerns regarding public access to high-profile landmarks. A spokesperson for Parliament stated that security protocols are constantly reviewed but declined to comment on specific measures in place. Questions have also been raised about how the protester managed to evade detection long enough to scale the tower.
