Battleground states to watch in the 2024 US Election

As the 2024 American election reaches its end, seven ‘swing’ states have been identified as the key battleground states which could swing the vote to either candidate. Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin could be the states which would ultimately decide whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump will be the next US president.

Both candidates have visited these key battleground states where polling was neck and neck between them.

Arizona has 11 electoral votes. Trump won it in 2016 but narrowly lost to Biden in 2020.

Georgia meanwhile has 16 electoral votes. As with Arizona, Trump won in 2016 but Biden won in 2020. This was a surprise as it was the first time that ‘the peach state’ had turned blue since Bill Clinton in 1992. Allegations mounted that Trump and his allies attempted to overturn its results.

Michigan has 15 electoral votes and also flipped from Trump to Biden between 2016 and 2020. It is part of a ‘blue wall’ of Midwestern states thought to be crucial battleground states for the Democrats. It is expected to remain competitive until the polls close.

Nevada has consistently voted for a Democrat candidate in the last four elections. With its six electoral votes, it has the smallest total of any of the battleground states.

North Carolina is the only other southern state besides Georgia. It is still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Both Harris and Trump visited ‘the tar heel state’ since the storm. Democrats have won North Carolina twice since 1968, the last being in 2008 when it chose Barack Obama over John McCain.

Pennsylvania is a crucial battleground for Harris and Trump. Biden took it in 2020 while Trump won in 2016. Both candidates for 2024 have visited it at least 20 times in the lead up to the election.

Finally, Wisconsin had consistently chosen a Democrat until 2016 when Trump flipped it, securing its 10 electoral votes. It swung back to blue in 2020. In both of the last two elections, its vote was decided by less than 1%!
