While the rising temperatures may make barbecues seem tempting, authorities are warning against the temptation due to the risk of a fire. The Met Office has issued an amber warning for fire severity in parts of England, the south of Scotland, and Northern Ireland. In Scotland, the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS) said that there is a “very high to extreme risk” of wildfires.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has urged on Londoners to take precautions against wildfires. Temperatures over the weekend are expected to climb higher than in Barcelona and Athens.
“As the weather warms up and we head towards Friday and the weekend, we would urge Londoners not to have barbecues in open spaces or on balconies, including disposable barbecues, to throw rubbish away, and to dispose of cigarettes carefully to avoid inadvertently starting a fire,” Assistant Commissioner Paul McCourt said.
This comes after England experienced its sunniest March ever. It was also the sixth driest since records began in 1836, according to the Met Office. Fire services say they have experienced an “exceptionally high” number of calls over grass fires earlier this week.
The last time the capital saw wildfires was in 2022 during a heatwave. Temperatures in the country had skyrocketed above 40C for the first time.
