B-2 bombers hit Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen

America has carried out a round of strikes on Yemen, using the B-2 bomber plane on the Iran-backed Houthis, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said. Five underground weapons storage facilities were hit by the stealth bomber.

The facilities hit by the B-2 were housing advanced conventional weapons that would be used to target both civilian and military vessels in both the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, according to three US Defense officials who spoke to CNN.

“This was a unique demonstration of the United States’ ability to target facilities that our adversaries seek to keep out of reach, no matter how deeply buried underground, hardened, or fortified,” Austin said in a statement. “The employment of US Air Force B-2 Spirit long-range stealth bombers demonstrates U.S. global strike capabilities to take action against these targets when necessary, anytime, anywhere.”

This marks the first time that the B-2 strategic stealth bomber was used to attack the Houthis in Yemen since America’s campaign began. The plane is larger than any fighter jet that has been used so far to target them. It is able to carry a much heavier load of bombs in comparison.

Austin said that the strikes were authorised at the discretion of President Joe Biden to “further degrade” the militant group’s abilities following over a year of attacks from the Houthis on American as well as international vessels in the area. The facilities hit by the B-2 were housing “various weapons components” which were used to target vessels in the Middle East, according to the Defense Secretary.

“We will continue to make clear to the Houthis that there will be consequences for their illegal and reckless attacks,” he said.
