Alleged drug boat from Venezuela destroyed by US military
The US military has destroyed an alleged Venezuelan drug vessel in International waters making its way to the US, President Donald Trump said. The US President said that the three men killed in the attack were “violent drug cartels,” but, according to the BBC, “provided no evidence” that the boat had any drugs on board.
Shortly before the sinking of the alleged drug boat, Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro said that the country would defend itself against American “aggression.” Maduro described the US’ top diplomat, Marco Rubio, the “lord of death and war.”
Tensions between the US and Venezuela have heightened since America deployed warships into the southern Caribbean. US officials say that these are counter-narcotics operations. A strike from the US has reportedly killed 11 people.
“This morning, on my orders, US military forces conducted a second kinetic strike against positively identified, extraordinarily violent drug trafficking cartels and narcoterrorists,” President Trump said on Truth Social. “These extremely violent drug trafficking cartels pose a threat to US national security.”
The post was shared along with a nearly 30-second-long video that appeared to show a boat in the water exploding before bursting into flames. Trump said from the Oval Office that the US has recorded proof and evidence that the boats were used by narco-terrorist groups.
“All you have to do is look at the cargo, it was spattered all over the ocean, big bags of cocaine and fentanyl all over the place,” he said. “We recorded them. It was very careful, because we know you people would be after us. We’re very careful.”
Trump went on to say that drug trafficking to America by sea has gone down, though he did say drugs were still entering the country by land. “We’re telling the cartels right now, we’re going to be stopping them too,” he said.
