All-electric future unlikely for Lamborghini
Lamborghini will not head towards an all-electric future, with chief executive Stephan Winkelmann saying its customers “the sound and the emotion” of an engine. The company will continue to produce petrol-powered cars for at least another decade.
Enthusiasm for an all-electric future, Winkelmann said, was declining, he told the BBC, but added that there is an opportunity to focus on hybrid power instead. Lamborghini will decide shortly whether its widely anticipated next model, the Lanzador, will be an electric vehicle (EV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) instead, he added.
The business, he stresses, was socially responsible, but added that a low-volume manufacturer has a limited impact on the environment. Lamborghini is a luxury brand owned by Volkswagen and currently has three models, the Temerario and Revuelto (pictured) supercars and Urus SUV. The former two are PHEVs while the latter is available as one. The Urus makes up over half of its sales.
It also makes a limited edition “super-sports” car, the Fenomeno, costing €3 million (£2.6 million) before taxes. Only 30 will be made.
In 2023, Lamborghini revealed plans for an EV successor to the Urus, slated to go on sale in 2029. The plans have since been shelved, with the new car not likely for at least another decade.
