Albert Bridge Set to Close for Essential Maintenance This October Half Term

Residents and drivers in Kensington and Chelsea are being advised to prepare for the Albert Bridge closure later this month, as council engineers undertake crucial decking maintenance on the listed structure. From 7am on Monday, 28th October 2024, to 7am on Saturday, 2nd November 2024, the bridge will be closed to vehicles in both directions.

What to Expect During the Closure

While pedestrians will still be able to cross the bridge throughout the works, drivers are encouraged to plan alternative routes and allow extra time for their journeys. A diversion will be in place via Chelsea Bridge or Battersea Bridge for the duration of the closure.

The Albert Bridge closure is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the bridge’s unique decked carriageway, ensuring that it remains in good condition for the future. The council previously carried out work on the bridge during the May half-term earlier this year, and this next phase will focus on the street lighting and pavements alongside the deck panels.

A Long-Term Approach to Preservation

Cllr Cem Kemahli, lead member for planning and public realm, explained the importance of the maintenance works, saying: “The iconic Albert Bridge is in safe hands with our engineers, who are completing these essential works to protect it for the future. We’re very grateful to drivers for their patience in the short term, as this ensures the listed bridge remains intact and operational.”

The bridge has been subject to a three-tonne weight restriction since January 2024, aimed at protecting the historic structure from damage. Since the introduction of the restriction, nearly 20,000 penalty charge notices have been issued to drivers breaching the limit. This measure, enforced by the council, is based on the vehicle’s official maximum gross weight as listed by the DVLA.

Additional Works on Battersea Bridge

As part of a series of infrastructure improvements in the area, TfL will also be conducting works on Battersea Bridge starting from, 30th October 2024. However, the works will primarily affect the south side in Wandsworth, and Battersea Bridge will remain open to traffic with a lane closure in place.
