Abu Dhabi to get Disney park
Abu Dhabi is set to become the latest city to receive a Disney theme park, joining a host of other attractions including Warner Bros World. Development on its Yas Island began less than two decades ago but it has quickly evolved into a global theme park destination, housing some of the most technologically advanced attractions in the world.
These include a 3D movie theatre, the world’s fastest roller coaster, and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, the planet’s largest indoor marine theme park. Now, Disney is set to partner with a company based in the United Arab Emirates, Miral, which was responsible for the other theme parks on Yas Island.
“This seventh Disney theme park resort will combine Disney’s iconic stories, characters and attractions with Abu Dhabi’s vibrant culture, stunning shorelines, and breathtaking architecture,” Disney said in a statement.
Miral tips itself as “being progressive” on its homepage, citing its social responsibility strategy. But Human Rights Watch has highlighted multiple repressive practices in the UAE including restricting the rights of LGBTQ+ people, and imprisoning activists and academics.
The Walt Disney Company has been criticised for not taking a tougher stance against anti-LGBTQ+ policies in its home, Florida including the state’s infamous ‘don’t say gay’ bill.
No date has been announced for the opening of Disney Abu Dhabi.
