Avalanche traps skiers in California
Six skiers have been rescued with nine remaining missing following an avalanche near the California town of Truckee, according to authorities. The avalanche struck the area of Castle Peak near Lake Tahoe, the Nevada Country Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. Castle Peak is a popular destination for skiers. The six who survived were rescued by a team who navigated treacherous conditions for hours to reach them, the sheriff’s office said.
“Two of the six skiers have been transported to a hospital for treatment. The search is ongoing, pending weather conditions,” Nevada County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Ashley Quadros said in a press release.
The mountain guide service reported the avalanche at around 11:30am local time on Tuesday 17th February, Russell Greene, a captain with the sheriff’s office said in an interview. Over 40 rescuers travelled to the site, Greene said.
Blackbird Mountain Guides, which offers guided tours in the area, said in a statement that the group included its clients and guides. “The group was in the process of returning to the trailhead at the conclusion of a three-day trip when the incident occurred,” the company said.
The group was staying in Frog Lake Backcountry Huts since Sunday, the company said. It provides accommodation “on the edge of an alpine lake nestled in pristine forest,” according to its website.
