Staying active, eating well, and quitting smoking are all proven to provide benefits including for your heart health. As many as 80% of heart disease and stroke cases are preventable. If you are between 40 and 74 years-old, you could be eligible for a free NHS Health Check, a 20-minute check-up that focuses on your heart and can help identify whether you’re at a higher risk of conditions including heat disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or a stroke, even before any symptoms appear.
The check will also provide an opportunity to discuss how to improve your health and whether you can receive support to make positive lifestyle changes. Book your free NHS Health Check with your local GP or pop into a participating pharmacy.
Around a quarter of heart disease deaths are linked to smoking, which damages blood vessels, raises blood pressure, and accelerates artery hardening, significantly increasing the risk of a heart attack or a stroke. Quitting can be one of the best ways to prevent cardiovascular disease, alongside high blood pressure, diabetes, and poor diet. Within a year of quitting, the risk of heart disease is cut in half and continues to fall as time goes on.
