HBO Max prepares for UK launch as streaming competition intensifies
HBO Max will enter the British streaming market later this month, with the HBO Max launch in the UK set for 26 March as the service looks to challenge established rivals with a catalogue built around familiar franchises, premium drama, and live sport.
The platform will be available in the UK and Ireland with monthly prices starting at £4.99, rising to £30.99 for packages that include TNT Sports. Executives are betting that a mix of returning favourites and long-awaited new titles will persuade viewers to take on another subscription in an already crowded market.

Among the draws is Friends, which has been without a UK streaming home since leaving Netflix at the end of last year, alongside HBO originals such as Euphoria and the forthcoming Harry Potter television adaptation. UK audiences will also be able to watch the US medical drama The Pitt, which arrives almost 15 months after its American debut.
The Pitt recently won best drama at both the Emmys and the Golden Globes, adding to a sense that HBO Max is arriving with a slate designed to signal quality rather than volume. Existing HBO series including Succession, The Sopranos, and Game of Thrones will also form part of the catalogue.
New commissions are expected to carry much of the growth burden. Lanterns, based on the Green Lantern characters, is due this summer, while the Harry Potter series is planned for next year. The third season of Euphoria is scheduled for April, and a new run of House of the Dragon is expected later in the year.
A launch shaped by Sky
HBO content has previously reached UK viewers through Sky and its streaming service Now. Under a new agreement, Sky customers will continue to receive programmes that began before the end of 2025, but new HBO-made originals will be exclusive to HBO Max.
The deal also means a combined bundle of Now and HBO Max will be offered, with existing Now Entertainment subscribers automatically migrated. Industry analysts say that arrangement is central to the platform’s prospects.
Tom Harrington, head of television at Enders Analysis, said there was little chance the service could have launched successfully without Sky’s backing. “There is no way that Max could have launched here without a deal with Sky,” he said. “It means HBO Max will be in more than 10 million households from day one.”
He added that many of HBO’s biggest continuing shows will remain on Sky, meaning the new platform will depend heavily on fresh commissions to build momentum. “On the content side, HBO’s hit rate is quite phenomenal. They release relatively little, but they nearly always have a few shows with real cultural cut-through.”
Sport, films, and an uncertain future
Beyond television drama, HBO Max will also be the UK streaming home of TNT Sports, which holds rights to competitions including the Premier League, FA Cup, Premiership rugby, UFC, and Grand Slam tennis. The film slate will include titles such as Superman, A Minecraft Movie, and awards contenders One Battle After Another and Sinners.
Yet the launch comes amid wider uncertainty about the future of HBO Max’s parent company, Warner Bros Discovery. Netflix is pursuing a potential acquisition of the group’s streaming and film assets, a move that could eventually reshape the market again.
Analysts note that any deal would face regulatory scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic. The streaming sector is already under pressure as companies look for scale and profitability, a trend tracked closely by industry researchers such as Forrester Research, which monitors consolidation and competition across global media markets.
For now, HBO Max is pressing ahead with a UK debut that places familiar brands at the centre of its pitch. Whether that will be enough to tempt viewers away from Netflix, Disney+, and Apple TV remains an open question.
