A new clearing system is set to be introduced for young people who missed out on a placement for an apprenticeship, allowing them to find an alternative, the government has announced.
Just like clearing for university or college, the process which matches students with an institution that has unfilled spaces, the new online platform will give information about alternative apprenticeship roles in their chosen area of interest.
Ministers hope that the new scheme will make it easier to navigate an apprenticeship as well as making them more appealing to young people who are considering their options.
“Outdated assumptions about how to make it into a successful career” have held young people back, according to Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“We’re unlocking opportunities for young people across the country by making it easier and faster to get the skills that matter, so more young people can build a secure life for themselves,” he added.
The scheme will “give those who miss out on their top-choice apprenticeship a second chance by matching them with another opportunity in their area,” Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden said.
The new system will be run in partnership with employers and mayoral strategic authorities, according to the BBC. It will also provide information about potential earnings in a role and long-term career prospects.
This is part of the government’s reforms that aim to deliver 50,000 additional apprenticeships for young people. It is supported by £725 million in funding.
The measures will play a role towards the government’s ambitions for two in three young people being in higher-level learning or apprenticeships.
