Housing benefit update from RBKC following cyberattack
Kensington & Chelsea says it has arranged around £10 million in housing benefit payments which were delayed as a result of the recent cyberattack. The council says it is sorry it “could not make these payments sooner,” adding that it knows “this has been a stressful time for many residents.
Anyone who rents from either a private landlord or a housing association and would normally be given housing benefit should receive their payment in the first week of February, with the money being paid into the same bank account as before.
It is a single payment that could cover housing benefit owed since 24th November 2025. This payment only covers housing benefit, with the council saying that its systems for council tax and council tax reduction “still being fixed.”
A temporary system has been put in place to ensure that “these emergency payments” can be made. This system will continue to be used for monthly payments while the council works to restore the normal housing benefits system. The council says it expects that to be back online by early spring.
Because it does not have access to all the data which would normally be used, there may be some errors. This is more likely if your circumstances have changed since 24th November 2025. If there is a problem with your payment, you can get in touch with the council at housingbenefit@rbkc.gov.uk.
The temporary system cannot be used to make payments for those who rent directly from the council or those placed in temporary accommodation by the council. Its teams are working directly with landlords and managing agents while a technical solution is found.
