Turbine engine powered by hydrogen to be tested

As the aviation industry struggles to clean its emissions, one collaboration has is testing the feasibility of using liquid hydrogen to power a turbine engine for light aircraft.

Turbotech, Safran, and Air Liquide have teamed up, testing a small turbopropo engine designed for two-to-seven seater airplanes running on hydrogen gas as a part of the BeautHyFuel project, a collaboration of primarily aviation companies exploring the potential of hydrogen fuel for light aircraft.

Now, with support from the French Civil Aviation Authority, Turbotech, Safran, and Air Liquide (a firm specialising in advanced cryogenic hydrogen storage) successfully ground-tested a turbine engine powered by liquid hydrogen. It marks the first time that such fuel has been used to power a turbine engine designed specifically for light aircraft.

The collaboration brings the expertise of each company. Turbotech specialised in light turbine technology, Safran’s experience is in propulsion and fuel systems, while Air Liquide focuses on storing, handling, and management of hydrogen.

“This is a major step forward in the transition to fully decarbonized aircraft propulsion, which will be ready to fly as soon as the world mass-produces green hydrogen,” CEO of Turbotech Damien Fauvet said.
