Headphones encouraged on public transport by TfL

A new poster campaign has been launched by TfL to encourage people to use headphones rather than playing content out of a device’s speakers. This hopes to encourage people to be “considerate towards others,” coming as TfL’s research shows that 70% of 1,000 customers surveyed said they found loud music and phone calls without headphones to be a nuisance.
TfL says that the “vast majority of Londoners” on public transport do use headphones while listening to content, saying that it is “a minority” who use their device’s speakers or make calls in speaker mode. This, it said “can cause discomfort and disruption to other customers.” It can be “especially acute for those with conditions which heighten noise sensitivity, such as autism,” TfL added.
With more of London’s transport network seeing 4G and 5G, this means more people than ever can stay connected. For that reason, TfL is launching the campaign to “remind people to be considerate of others when using their devices,” being the latest phase of its #TravelKing campaign launched in 2017. The campaign encourages users of the network to be considerate of one another.
Posters have been put up on the Elizabeth line. The line is the nation’s busiest railway, seeing 800,000 passenger journeys every day. The posters will then be expanded to bus, DLR, Overground, Underground, and Tram Services in October.
It has partnered with JBL to further promote the message to customers, with a competition to run on Instagram to win one of five pairs of wireless JBL Live 770 NC headphones. To enter, customers need to like the post, follow TfL and JBL UK, and tag a friend in the comments.
“People are also encouraged to continue to look up from their screens when using public transport, in case someone needs their seat more than them, as part of TfL’s #TravelKind campaign,” TfL said.
