Felicia Fun “cult classic” pickup rebooted by Skoda concept

Skoda has paid tribute to the Felicia Fun, the cult classic pickup, with a new design study. The concept, penned by French stylist Julien Petitseigneur, combines the spirit of the original car from the 1990s with the company’s modern design.

The Felicia Fun was a bold idea when it launched in 1997, bringing a unique twist to the company’s lineup. Its sliding rear partition and pop-up rear seats made it a cult favourite, today being one of the rarest Skodas ever produced with just 4,200 made.

The new concept brings Skoda’s modern design, especially from the firm’s electric SUVs, to create a modern interpretation of the original. The wide stance and aerodynamic wheels, as well as its chunky black bumpers and wheel arches, contrast with the bright canary yellow body.

The full-width rear spoiler from the original Felicia Fun is carried over, though it has now evolved into a light bar, emitting pink rather than red light. Neon pink was also chosen for wheel highlights and glass tints to, according to Skoda, “further reinforce the car’s playful, beachside feel.”

“The original car was pure fun,” Petitseigneur said, “it didn’t take itself too seriously, and it stood out in a way that few other Skodas ever have. For me, it was the obvious choice to reimagine in my spare time. I even found myself looking at buying an original while working on the sketches.”

The combination of old and modern continues inside with the full-width dashboard screen featuring old-school video game-style graphics, and the screens designed such that they resemble a modern interpretation of an old-school CRT monitor.

“The Felicia Fun was unusual, but its design was relatively simple, which made adapting it to Modern Solid surprisingly straightforward.” Explains Petitseigneur. “It had clean shapes and very little ornamentation, so updating it was more about proportions and details than reinventing it entirely.”
