Garratt Lane secures £200k for resurfacing

Garratt Lane will benefit from a £200,000 investment from TfL, thanks to a successful bid from Wandsworth Council, in what it hails as “a further boost to Wandsworth’s biggest road resurfacing programme in London.” This investment supports Wandsworth’s ongoing Decade of Renewal pledge to maintain and improve the borough’s roads, pavements and infrastructure, with its programme of investment this year.

This is the second time in three years that the borough has been successful in bidding for the maximum available amount of money from TfL, helping it to improve roads and pavements, without costing residents a penny in Council Tax.

The £200,000 will be spent on resurfacing one of the busiest roads, Garratt Lane (A217), between Burntwood Lane and Summerstown, including the roundabout area.  Last year, council funds were invested in resurfacing a long stretch of Garratt Lane (from Bendon Valley to Algarve Road and from Sumerley Street to Burntwood Lane). With this additional funding, almost 64% of the length of the road (2.7km out of 4.2km) will have been resurfaced. Pavement repairs of Garratt Lane (Allfarthing Lane to Magdalen Road) have also been taking place this year.

This new funding comes from a limited pot, which is made available to all London boroughs through a competitive bidding process. The funds are specifically for the upkeep of principal A roads, known as the Borough Principal Road Network (BPRN). These roads carry high volumes of traffic and are essential for public transport, pedestrians, and cyclists.

In 2023/24, Wandsworth used its £200k allocation to improve Tibbet’s Corner roundabout on the A219 including a section of Wimbledon Park Side (up to the Bus Stop near Oatlands Court). Other roads in Wandsworth are being assessed in case more funding becomes available.

If you’ve seen a dangerous pothole, you can report it to to the council, so that it can be fixed within 7 days, part of the 7 rings 7 days guarantee.
