The Fair Pour: Pay-What-You-Feel Pub Opens in London

For one day only this January, Londoners can experience The Fair Pour, a unique pay-what-you-feel pub concept, designed to spotlight income inequality and highlight the wealth disparity between the super-rich and the rest of the world. The pub, backed by Oxfam, is set to take over The Queen’s Head at 64 Theobalds Road on 21st January from midday to 9 pm, coinciding with the Davos World Economic Forum. This timely initiative will also offer a free quiz for visitors at 7 pm.

The Fair Pour is more than just a pop-up pub; it’s a thought-provoking project aimed at drawing attention to Oxfam’s key message about economic inequality. Customers will be encouraged to pay for their drinks based on their financial means. While affluent visitors are asked to dig a little deeper, others on tighter budgets can pay what they can afford. The idea is to simulate a fairer tax system, something Oxfam argues could help fund critical areas like healthcare, education, fair wages, and climate crisis protection.

This innovative event takes place against the backdrop of rising living costs, including London’s skyrocketing pub prices, where a pint can now cost up to £8. Oxfam’s approach cleverly combines a light-hearted venue with a serious message, using humour and engagement to raise awareness about how even small adjustments to the tax contributions of the wealthiest individuals could drive meaningful global change.

For those participating in Dry January, The Fair Pour will have a variety of alcohol-free options to ensure everyone feels included. And if you’re a pub quiz fan, the 7 pm quiz promises to be an entertaining way to engage with the evening’s themes.

Whether you’re there for a budget-friendly drink, a pint priced on your wealth, or simply to support a cause that highlights global inequality, The Fair Pour is an event not to miss. As Oxfam puts it, “It’s time for the super-rich to give back,” and their creative initiative makes the message all the more impactful.
