Thunderstorms Disrupt London Travel Plans

Londoners could be in for a dramatic start to the week as thunderstorms are forecast to hit the capital on Monday. While the city enjoys a spell of summer-like warmth with temperatures climbing to 23°C, scattered storms are expected to roll in from midday through to 10pm.

The forecast includes short but intense bursts of rain, lightning, and even hail in some areas. With the heat building, the ingredients are in place for classic early-summer thunderstorms, particularly in parts of southern and central England. Rainfall could reach 20 to 30mm within the space of an hour, with some areas seeing as much as 50mm if the storms intensify.

Travel plans may need adjusting. Drivers should be aware of poor road conditions, and those heading to or from train stations could face delays or cancellations. Localised flooding, especially around low-lying areas or busy junctions, is a possibility. There’s also a risk of power outages and disruption to small businesses and homes, especially in places where drainage is slow or already under pressure.

The good news? While Monday’s weather might be unpredictable, the days that follow are expected to feel more like a proper early summer. Forecasts suggest a long stretch of dry, sunny weather with highs remaining above 21°C. It’s a welcome sign for anyone planning picnics, commuting by bike, or simply making the most of outdoor spaces across the capital.

These sharp bursts of summer storms often arrive quickly and disappear just as fast, but the advice is to keep an umbrella handy and double-check travel updates before setting out. If you’re travelling during the peak of the rain or on routes prone to congestion, it might be worth allowing extra time or exploring quieter alternatives.
