Shark attack kills tourist off Egyptian coast

A shark attack by the Red Sea coastline in Egypt has killed one tourist and left another injured according to officials from the country. The north African country’s environment ministry said in a statement that the incident occurred north of Marsa Alam, a resort town in the east of Egypt and popular site for divers.
The shark attack happened in “deep waters outside of the designated swimming area,” it added. The ministry reported only that the victims were not Egyptian nationals. AFP news agency reported that they were Italian citizens, quoting an unnamed source from Italy’s foreign ministry.
The tourist who died was a 48-year-old man who lived in Rome, and the injured man was 69 years old, AFP reported. The pair were transported to a hospital in Port Ghalib, approximately 30 miles north of Marsa Alam, Egyptian officials said.
Authorities said that the Marsa Alam swimming area will be closed off as the incident is being investigated.
Over the past decade, the Red Sea has seen four confirmed deaths from shark attacks, data from the independent Shark Research Institute revealed. The last incident happened near Hurguda in June 2023 involving a 24-year-old man from Russia.
