Mayor commends police and Londoners amid unrest

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has expressed his deep appreciation for the exceptional efforts of the Metropolitan Police following a night of calm in the capital, despite recent violence and disorder across other parts of the country.

In a statement, the Mayor paid tribute to the police officers who worked tirelessly to maintain order, highlighting their crucial role in preventing the kind of disturbances seen elsewhere. “I would like to pay tribute to the outstanding work of our police officers across London last night,” he said.

He also extended his gratitude to the residents of London who participated in peaceful demonstrations, reinforcing the city’s unity against racism and Islamophobia. “To those who came out peacefully to show London stands united against racism and Islamophobia last night – thank you,” the Mayor stated.

Khan acknowledged the troubling incidents of violence that have occurred in various towns and cities across the UK in recent days. However, he pointed out that London managed to avoid a similar outbreak of violence, thanks to the proactive and diligent work of the Metropolitan Police. “The Met has worked tirelessly to make it clear that such violence will not be tolerated and that anyone seeking to engage in disorder and sow division would face the full force of the law,” he emphasized.

He assured the public that he remains in close contact with the Met Commissioner and that there will be an increased police presence across the capital in the coming days. This measure aims to reassure and protect communities, ensuring the safety and harmony of the city’s diverse population. Khan also reaffirmed his commitment to fostering an inclusive and tolerant environment, stating, “I’m clear that there is no place for violence, racism, Islamophobia, and antisemitism in our city, and we will never let those who seek to divide our communities win.”

Concluding his statement, Mayor Khan underscored London’s enduring pride in its diversity, affirming that the city will always be a beacon of openness and welcome. “London is proud of our diversity and of being an open and welcoming city, and always will be,” he declared.
