India-Pakistan Tensions Escalate Following Cross-Border Strikes
Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply following a series of missile strikes by India into Pakistani-controlled territory, resulting in significant casualties and prompting international concern and heightened India-Pakistan tensions.
On May 7, 2025, India launched “Operation Sindoor,” targeting what it described as militant infrastructure linked to the recent attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 Indian tourists. The strikes hit multiple locations, including areas in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Punjab province. Pakistan reported that at least 31 civilians were killed, including women and children, and 46 others injured. India maintains that the operation was a necessary response to terrorism, asserting that the targets were associated with groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba.
In retaliation, Pakistan claimed to have shot down several Indian aircraft and engaged in artillery exchanges along the Line of Control (LoC), resulting in additional casualties on both sides. The Pakistani government condemned the Indian strikes as an act of war and has vowed to respond accordingly.
The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice, warning against all travel within 10 kilometers of the India-Pakistan border, as well as to Jammu and Kashmir (excluding certain areas) and the state of Manipur. Travelers are advised to monitor airline updates, as flight disruptions have occurred due to the heightened tensions.
In London, protesters gathered outside the Indian High Commission in Aldwych to demonstrate against India’s actions, carrying flags and chanting slogans calling for peace. The Metropolitan Police were present to ensure the protest remained peaceful.
International leaders, including those from the UK, US, China, and Turkey, have urged both nations to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to prevent further escalation. The situation remains volatile, with the potential for further developments in the coming days.
Travellers have been advised to check directly with their airline or review the latest flight status updates to avoid disruption, as airspace closures have led to multiple diversions.
